Greetings Stakeholders of Valdez Schools,
Success is easily noted in each of our school building as we creep towards our mid-year break. I am continually pleased with our overall student achievement. I have been impressed with the increased use of the parent/student access to PowerSchool. Parent/Teacher conferences were well attended, but daily access to student performance compliments the consistent need for the reinforcement of our students. As you review the grades of your children, please take advantage of the opportunity to meet personally with your children’s teachers whenever necessary.
Valdez City Schools continues to develop great partnerships with local businesses. Two partnerships that deserve to be highlighted are those with our local Prince William Sound College and Providence Hospital.
Valdez High School currently has 85+ students taking 125+ college credit courses. The combined funding efforts of the City of Valdez, federal grants, and the school district, have made these courses available at no cost to the students. Additional, challenging courses provide an incentive to not only stay in school, but to complete the coursework leading to a possible Associate of Arts Degree.
The numbers regarding the impact of mental health issues that go unchecked are staggering. Data shows that medical conditions at hospitals can have as much as a 40% correlation with an underlying mental health condition. Providence Hospital and Valdez School District recently entered into a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for support for mental health needs of our students. Although the initial intent of this MOA was to make this service available to our high school students, Providence now assists with critical mental health support in grades K-12. Certified mental health counselors from Providence are now available to all of our students two days a week.
With the difficult times ahead due to the many challenges associated with our state’s budget deficit, please contact my office with any questions you may have regarding our budget, budgeting process, and the timelines associated with that process.
There are a lot of great things happening in our schools! Please accept this as an invite to stop by at any of the athletic or art/music events that are happening in our district. Best wishes as we enter the holiday season!
