American Bald Eagle
by Mathew

The eagle is a great hunter. Its feet have sharp, curved, talons that are one and a half inches long for grasping its prey. Some prey, like fish, are slippery and eagles have tiny spikes on the bottoms of their feet to hold them tight. Its strong, hooked beak is two inches long and can tear apart animals for eating.

Eagles and their cousins, the hawks, have excellent eyesight. They can see small animals such as rabbits or mice moving in the grass from a mile away. The eagle eats fish, rabbits, and any small animal that it can find in the grass or in the water.

Eagles are found throughout the world but not in Antarctica where they were killed off.

You could find eagles real easy here in Valdez. Yesterday I saw seven eagles in one tree right in town! My teacher took this picture of sixteen eagles in one tree this April! The bald eagle above had the misfortune of getting electrocuted.

During the winter of 2000-2001, it is estimated that between 50 to 60 Bald Eagles congregated within the Valdez city limits. These photos were added to the site during that period.
