Valdez City School's mission is schools, parents, and community united in education for life: Instructing, inspiring, and empowering every student in a safe environment. We do this by offering a challenging curriculum across all four schools - Hermon Hutchens Elementary, Gilson Middle School, Valdez High School, and Valdez Homeschool Program. Students enjoy a rich educational experience from Pre-Kindergarten through twelfth grade through the collaborative efforts of engaging teachers, administrators, and staff. We strive for excellence through every academic and extracurricular opportunity.
Families New to Valdez - Valdez continues to be the community with promise. We encourage you to visit our schools and enroll your children. The district office is available to assist with the enrollment process over the summer months. Beginning in August there will be someone at each of the schools who can assist in the enrollment process.
Welcome Message from Superintendent Watkins
Welcome to Valdez City School’s school year 2021-2022. Let me start by saying my family and I are excited to be part of the Valdez community. I know last year was a challenging year for students and their families, and on behalf of Valdez City Schools, we want to extend a very sincere thank you to all of you who rode the COVID-19 rollercoaster with us. We have learned so much since last year and are prepared and excited for the 2021-2022 school year. As a reflection, I wanted to share some information with you about our school’s reopening guidelines. Each district was tasked with creating an individual plan for safely opening their schools. We worked through all of the guidelines provided to ensure safety, continuity of instruction, and building capacity to support the ever-changing landscape. In light of the additional stress on students and staff we are focused on the social and emotional needs of our students and staff. COVID-19 has challenged staff and students to find a new normal for learning and connected us in new ways. What I have most learned through this process is how much I appreciate the expertise of teachers, patience of families, and the resilience of our students to adapt and continue to strive for excellence. As we enter the 2021-2022 school year we do so with confidence, hope, and a relentless pursuit of love and kindness. Things may be a little difference but the commitment of the Valdez City School families is the same. We will provide a quality education for every student every day. So, let’s go! We are ready! Our classroom and hearts are ready for you. Opening school information will be forthcoming in the next week. A draft of our plan can be found on the district’s website. Updates are happening daily, so check often. An opportunity to comment on school reopening will be provided at the August 9th school board meeting.
