    Hello All,

    As you are aware, we have been working on a modified flex Friday schedule and gathering feedback.  With a massive amount of support from all respondents, the proposal was given to the Valdez Board of Education.  At the regular scheduled meeting on April 8th, the Board unanimously approved the modified calendar.

    Staff spoke to the challenges of our current situation and the potential benefits with what the flexible Friday schedule can look like for our students.  Make no mistake, this is going to take a very concerted effort to be successful.  Our building administrators will be tasked with employing metrics to demonstrate growth in academics, engagement, attendance, and family/community outreach.  I have all the faith in the world that we will build this into a very successful model and better serve our students.  

    With the Board approval, the next steps to finalize this process are to appeal to the state to follow state statute which allows the district to have a calendar which is regulated by hours of available instruction. and not calendar days.  I do not anticipate any major obstacles with this process and will update the Board and the public when we have approval.

    I want to thank all of you who participated in the process and attended any of the public meetings.  I  want to thank the members of the committee for their work on this as well.  We certainly have our work cut out for us and I am very much looking forward to taking full advantage of the opportunity this calendar provides for our students.

    I want to thank all of you who participated in one or more of the three information sessions held earlier this month regarding the Flexible Friday schedule proposal.  There were a lot of great questions and I hoped to answer as many of the questions as I could.  As this is still a proposal with some things to get worked out should we move forward, I am taking all of the questions and comments to the committee for discussion.  


    Below are questions that were asked during the sessions.  Additionally, I am sharing the PowerPoint used.  I would encourage you to look at the references and think about if this would be a good fit for Valdez and your child(ren).  


    The committee will be meeting as many times as necessary to make an informed decision on whether or not to advance this proposal.  Your input is greatly appreciated and valued.  

    You can expect a survey to address the general concept and, as identified below, some concerns and challenges we may have in moving forward, if at all.
