Hermon Hutchens Elementary School serves approximately 300 students in preschool through fifth grade and is located in Valdez, Alaska on beautiful Prince William Sound. Our school offers great educational opportunities for every student with curriculum-based best practices. All students also attend "pull out" classes in physical education, art + tech, music, and library.
For the 2022-2023 school year, the Child Nutrition Program will be required to charge for meals. For the past two years, the USDA granted waivers that allowed students to eat at no charge. K-Bound Preschool Enrollment for our Kindergarten Bound Preschool is now open! Children must be 4 years old by September 1st, toilet trained, and go thru an academic screening. To inquire, please call 907.835.4728
STATE TESTING: The Alaska Dept. of Education and Early Development (DEED) recently announced a new statewide summative assessment. AKSTAR will replace the Performance Evaluation for Alaska's Schools (PEAKS) assessment for the English language arts (ELA) and mathematics. AKSTAR will be administered to students in grades 3-9 to assess their understanding of the Alaska ELA and Math Standards adopted in 2012. Students in grades 5, 8, and 10 will also take the Alaska Science Assessment using the Data Recognition Corporation (DRC) testing platform.
