Our Community
Valdez, Alaska (population approx. 4,000) is located in the northeast section of Prince William Sound and at the beginning of the Richardson Highway. Situated on the road system, with an active harbor and airport, Valdez is accessible by land, air, or water. Fairbanks is located 365 miles to the north and Anchorage is 306 miles to the west.
The town and the surrounding area boasts spectacular scenery and diverse wildlife. It's location also makes it ideal for varied outdoor recreational activities. Community events are held throughout the year and vary based on the season. The largest employers in the city include Alyeska Pipeline Service Company, Providence Medical Center, the City of Valdez/Valdez City Schools, the Coast Guard, Silver Bay and Peter Pan Fisheries, and Valdez Fisheries Development Association. Higher educational opportunities are available from Prince William Sound College, which offers several associate-level degrees, certificates, and continuing education opportunities.
Valdez has a long history closely tied to the development of the State of Alaska. From the Gold Rush to the 1964 Earthquake and the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, many events have shaped the town into the community it is today. Community Activities
Community events in Valdez are held throughout the year and vary based on the season. A few of the most notable events are the annual Halibut and Silver Salmon Derbies, Gold Rush Days, and the Ice Climbing Festival. School activities- from sports to music events- are a large part of the community and the buildings are utilized by the City and various organizations to host events.
A more extensive list of community events is available on the Valdez Visitor Center website. The City of Valdez updates their Parks and Recreation site every month with a list of city-sponsored events taking place around town, as well as a list of movies premiering at the Civic Center. The community also has an active Arts Council that works to bring different performers into town throughout the year. School events are posted on the main web pages for each of the buildings.
