Curriculum Review Cycle Information

The Curriculum Review Cycle at Valdez City Schools is a structured process designed to continuously monitor, evaluate, revise, and implement curriculum changes.

Providing teachers with the necessary support, training, instructional resources, and a positive learning environment is crucial for meeting the needs of all students. The curriculum areas follow a staggered, multi-year cycle, with each subject receiving concentrated attention as it progresses through the stages of review. Budget allocations for materials, supplies, and staff development are directed toward ensuring the successful implementation of these revisions. This phased approach allows teachers to focus on integrating new programs by concentrating on one content area at a time, rather than juggling multiple initiatives.

The curriculum review cycle consists of three stages:

  1. Research & Evaluation (Committee Work)
  2. Development (Committee Work)
  3. Pilot (when necessary)
  4. Implemention
  5. Monitoring and Assessing

Typically, the committee work phase spans two years, followed by a year of initial implementation. Committee members represent a wide variety of stakeholders, including teachers, administrators, and parents.

The final stage, which involves monitoring, evaluating, and making adjustments, lasts four years. This extended period allows sufficient time to assess the impact of revisions and align with the district’s vision for student learning.
