    Mrs. Shannon Major


    Shannon Major is a long-time Valdez resident and a Valdez High School graduate.  She fufilled her life-long school counseling goal through a winding life journey.  After high school, she completed her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from University of Alaska Anchorage as a UA Scholar recipient.  Returning to Valdez to start her family, she worked with the local domestic violence shelter as a teen interpersonal violence prevention specialist.  As her children began to enter the school system, she continued her own education with a Master in Social Work degree, with a School Social Work certification. She is passionate about helping students prevail over life challenges, set goals for success, and define their future.

    I grew up in Palmer, Alaska and graduated from Palmer High School in 2012; I was awarded the Bill and Melinda Gates Millennium Scholarship. I attended Union University in Jackson, Tennessee, where I was a member of their NCAA Division II volleyball team as a Defensive Specialist and had the opportunity to study abroad in five different countries. I graduated with a Bachelors in Social Work with minors in Speech & Photojournalism in May 2017. I married my incredible husband, Ben, in June 2017!

    Ben and I moved to Memphis, TN for four years while he completed dental school and I completed my Masters in Education (M.A.Ed). During this time, I student taught 9 -12th grade Physical Education and English. After graduation in 2019, I started my Doctorate in Education program in 2020 and successfully defended my dissertation on Financial Literacy in Higher Education Graduates in September 2023 to earn my Doctorate in Education (Ed.D). 

    Ben and I were thrilled to move back to Alaska in September 2021! We love backcountry and cross country skiing, biking, running, and sea kayaking. We have three dogs, Bear, Bozeman, and Tulla, who are our favorite adventure buddies!
