School Board
Valdez City Schools is governed by a seven-member Board of Education whose members are elected for three-year terms. The Board meets in regular session at 7:00 p.m. twice each month. Meetings, which are open to the public, are held in City Council Chambers. Special meetings are scheduled as necessary.
Parents and other community members exercise their voice in public education through the election of the board of education. The board appoints the superintendent who carries out the policies set by the school board.
The board and the superintendent work together to assure the best interests of the community's children and the patrons of the school district. Although this is a team concept, both the board and the superintendent have unique responsibilities. The board sets the policies and the priorities; the superintendent and staff carry out those policies and priorities. Board members act only as a whole and do not act on an individual basis. One of the board's responsibilities is not to respond individually, but to ensure that the school district is responding.
